I help physicians gain control over their finances.
Mark McGrath, CFP®
I've been thinking about money for a long time.
My dad taught me to read stock quotes in the newspaper (remember those?) when I was ten. Back then, they quoted stock prices in fractions instead of decimals!
We competed against each other, picking stocks and checking the paper each day to see who was in the lead.
Sometimes, I even beat him.
He taught me that if you don't control your money, your money will control you.
And that stuck.
Manage your money, and you create opportunities. Ignore it, and you'll find your choices made for you.
It's a lot like chess. Fail to plan ahead, and soon you're frantically moving your king around to avoid checkmate. You've lost control of your pieces and have run out of options.
There are more unique chess game combinations than there are atoms in the universe. It's impossible to foresee every outcome, and the optimal game is only knowable in hindsight. The best players think several moves ahead but are ready to react to unexpected moves at all times.
Personal finance is the same. We can't see every future possibility, but we can plan ahead. And when life throws us curveballs, how we react makes all the difference.
But unlike chess, playing well means making your dreams a reality.
I haven't seen it all, but I've seen a lot. Over the past 15 years, I've worked with over 500 physicians and their families, helping them take control of their money and make sound financial decisions around portfolio management, retirement planning, tax planning, estate planning, and risk management. I've also coached over 250 financial planners on delivering high-quality, meaningful financial planning advice.
I was a co-host of the renowned Rational Reminder podcast, am the co-author of the new book "Wealthier: The Investment Field Guide for Canadian Millennials" with NYT Bestselling Author Dan Solin, and am a contributing author to FP Canada Institute's Technical Education programs, a prerequisite for students pursuing the CFP designation. I've shared my insights on dozens of industry podcasts, including the Wealthy Barber Podcast and Money Made Simple with Bruce Sellery, and am a frequent contributor for various publications like the Globe and Mail, Globe Advisor, and MoneySense. I'm a two-time speaker at the Physicians' Financial Independence Conference and the Institute of Advanced Financial Planners' annual Symposium, as well as several other financial conferences.
When I'm not nerding out on personal finance, I'm usually hanging out with my incredible wife, Denise, and our beautiful young children, Noah and Emilie.

Denise Cochegrus Jaime
I'm a math and data geek, and my idea of a good time is spending a whole day inside a spreadsheet. I’m not a financial planner, in the traditional sense - I’m a Systems and Industrial Engineer. I focus on structure, data, processes, and efficiency, not personal financial advice. I spent most of my career focusing on operational strategy, systems improvement, and logistics planning for world-renowned companies like Amazon, Lululemon, C&A, Tentree, and Hershey. At Phynance, I handle processes and infrastructure—the behind-the-scenes frameworks that enable Mark to do a great job with our clients.
Because whether you’re planning global supply chains or boutique financial planning services, your success often hinges on the strength of your systems.
When I’m not busy streamlining processes and building workflows for Phynance, I’m usually spending time with our children, watching American Football or Formula 1 (go Lando!), or visiting with my family in Mexico.
A Process Built Around You.
Our process is structured, transparent, and designed to give physicians confidence at every step—from the very first touchpoint.
Step 1 | Data Gathering
We begin by collecting the key details needed to understand your full financial picture. You’ll complete a guided intake form and securely share your information through document uploads and trusted third-party tools. This ensures we start with accurate, complete data.
Step 2 | Data Clarity
Next, we review everything you’ve submitted and move into the “data clarity” phase. We'll send you an email with any questions or items that need clarification. If something requires a deeper conversation, we’ll schedule a short meeting.
Step 3 | Plan Delivery Meeting
In this in-depth session, we walk through your comprehensive financial plan together. You’ll see where you stand today, explore recommendations tailored to your goals, and understand the potential impact of each decision.
Step 4 | Deliverables
Following the plan delivery, you’ll receive a complete financial plan in PDF format, a prioritized action checklist, and additional supporting materials. These resources give you a clear roadmap to move forward with confidence.
Step 5 | Post-Plan Support
After delivery, you’ll have up to two months of access for questions or clarifications related to your plan. This ensures you feel fully supported as you begin implementing your strategy.
He serves his clients adeptly by providing balanced, helpful, astute, up-to-date, and thoughtful advice tailored to their specific needs.

Our FAQs
These FAQs explain how our process works, what’s included, and what you can expect when working with Phynance.
What services do you offer?
We provide advice-only, project-based financial planning for Canadian physicians. Every plan covers core areas like cash flow, debt, investments, retirement, tax, insurance, and estate planning, with additional work for corporations and more complex situations.
Who do you work with?
Our focus is Canadian physicians and physicians-in-training — residents, new-to-practice physicians, and established physicians, whether or not they’re incorporated.
How does the process work?
We begin with a brief introductory meeting to make sure we’re the right fit. From there, you’ll move through our five-step planning process: gathering your data, reviewing and clarifying your information, meeting to walk through your personalized financial plan, receiving your full set of deliverables, and having continued support for questions over the following two months.
How do you get paid?
Do you sell financial products or receive commissions?
No. The work is advice-only. We don’t sell investments or insurance, and we don’t earn commissions, so our recommendations are not tied to product sales.
